Concluding Remarks for the Future
Abstract
This chapter addresses an underlying central question about how nurses can be prepared and supported to remain in the profession. A model is included that suggests a framework for a comprehensive approach to retaining nurses in the profession. Specifically, the model introduces an overall strategy to the field of knowledge, considering whether moral or moral-philosophical related notions constitute insights and perspectives of crucial differences regarding the retention of nurses. The adequacy of a comprehensive retention approach is discussed by highlighting what seems significant for nurses to remain, indicating what a retention approach may entail. As a concluding chapter, included are some considerations concerning how eHealth technologies integrated into professional practice can alter practice and, in turn, impact nurses remaining in the profession. The chapter emphasizes the imperative of retaining nurses in a profession with an ongoing and increasing shortage of nurses, and it contains a few implications for practice.
