Abstract

Leadership thinking has evolved from being power-centric models to a human-centred approach, emphasising emotional and social intelligence, inspiring, motivating, and guiding others towards a common goal. The evolution in leadership thought is a result of the growing recognition of its relational dimensions in addressing modern organisational challenges. Therefore, leadership development involves not only imparting technical skills but also nurturing emotional and social capabilities such as adaptability, diversity, and cross-cultural competencies to navigate global complexities, fostering resilient organisations. This chapter critically investigates the essence of leadership and the various pathways to leadership development. Particularly, this chapter underscores leadership transitions from being an inherent trait to a dynamic, learnt skill that adapts to an organisation’s specific needs. Moreover, the study explores leadership theories, highlighting the potential for leadership development programmes and experiential learning methods; emphasising the impact of digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), and automation on leadership; and noting the ethical concerns these technologies raise. It further discusses the importance of cultural intelligence (CQ) and global leadership competencies in managing multicultural teams and navigating the difficulties of international business environments. This chapter enhances leadership literature by integrating organisational learning, growth mindset, and diversity, extending understanding of transformational, inclusive, and digital leadership theories, while highlighting global leadership capabilities.
