Abstract

This chapter explores the evolving paradigm of distributed leadership as a framework for navigating complexity, fostering collaboration, and enhancing organisational adaptability. Rather than positioning leadership as the domain of a singular individual, the chapter argues that leadership is a shared, relational, and situated practice enacted through formal structures, interpersonal trust, and enabling technologies. Attention is given to the key mechanisms—including team-based routines, psychological safety, and collaborative platforms—that support leadership distribution across levels and functions. Evidence-based impacts on team performance, decision-making quality, and organisational learning are discussed, illustrating the model’s transformative potential. The chapter also critically engages with current and future trends, including the influence of digital transformation, hybrid work, equity imperatives, and artificial intelligence (AI). It concludes by outlining practical implications for leadership development, policy, and organisational design and makes the case for distributed leadership as a necessary model in increasingly networked and dynamic organisational environments.
