Abstract

This chapter provides ways to deter and challenge assumptions by reframing how difference and identity are acknowledged in training. Trainer positionality is considered as an effective way to build trust through vulnerability. Trainers describe how they create welcoming environments for underrepresented groups and set up psychological safety so that learners feel enabled to invest in trickier topics of conversation. Some of the tips here focus on specific forms of exclusion which can occur through cultural ignorance and bias. We learn how these can be overcome through simple situational adjustments. Co-teaching, catering, music, and concentration tools are explored as ways to create an inclusive atmosphere.
