Physiology of Labour Onset
Abstract
Chapter 5 describes the physiologic process of labour onset, which requires complex hormonal interplay between the mother, fetus, and placenta. The authors describe the phases of parturition, highlighting the hormonal changes that occur as the woman moves from the quiescent stage of pregnancy to the activation phase. The cervical, uterine, and pelvic changes that occur prior to labour are also outlined. The way these changes are experienced by women is discussed.
