Abstract

This chapter examines Brimbank LIVE, a youth-led radio initiative based in the municipality of Brimbank, located in the western suburbs of Naarm (Melbourne), Australia. Spearheaded by young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, the program served as a dynamic platform for storytelling – where participants engaged with themes of identity, place, and political significance. Framed through the lens of cultural citizenship, the chapter explores how Brimbank LIVE empowered youth to resist dominant narratives, assert complex identities, and foster a sense of inclusion. Through the creation and broadcast of their stories, participants cultivated belonging and enacted epistemic justice, challenging established representations while envisioning more expansive and inclusive understandings of self and community. The chapter extends social psychological understandings of citizenship by incorporating a community psychology lens, emphasising culture as a vehicle for collective action and community-driven praxis.
