Abstract

In this chapter the often-overlooked aspects of parenthood are explored, that of infertility and baby loss. Pulling on personal experience, the author discusses the impact baby loss had on her work, leading to a piece created to raise awareness of this taboo subject. Other work is explored too that highlights and harnesses these harrowing aspects of the parenting journey, with examples of artists using lived experience and others amplifying the voice of the unheard. This discussion is one that highlights the way in which an emotional toll can seep into creative work. It shows the resilience of artists who choose to channel this pain and explores how this creative expression is a way of coping and healing whilst being a tool to raise awareness.
