Abstract

This introductory chapter outlines the central themes and objectives of the edited volume Women’s Pathways to Power: Cracking the Glass Ceiling . It situates the book within ongoing global efforts to address gender inequality across public, professional and private spheres. Despite notable progress in education, employment and political representation, women continue to face systemic barriers to power, including the gender pay gap, underrepresentation in leadership and structural discrimination. The chapter explains how the book will critique dominant narratives that place the burden of change on women and outlines its advocacy for a reconceptualization of power that is inclusive and intersectional. Drawing on interdisciplinary research and global case studies from leading international scholars with experience researching women and power, the introduction outlines why the book is divided into three sections that focus on public life, professional life and home life. It then introduces the chapter authors and their focus. The introduction sets the stage for a collection that not only diagnoses persistent gender disparities but also offers concrete, context-sensitive solutions from a range of diverse country examples, at national and subnational levels, that show a way forward for achieving gender parity.
