Introduction
Abstract
This book argues that world literature endorses an ontological difference between violence in the Global South and the “everyday” violence that occasionally darkens the doorstep of the North. Specifically, it argues that world literature has commercialised Latin American violence, such that it has become a genre, obfuscating the collective reality of and responsibility for violence. This is neither a work of area studies nor one of comparative literature. It looks exclusively at works in translation, and thus examines the commodified and curricularised image of the world that is the object of a critical backlash against world literature.
