Abstract

When Toto tells the narrator of Senselessness by email: “Everybody&s;s fucked. Be grateful you left ” (Castellanos Moya 2008 , 142, emphasis added), he insinuates that the violence in the country that is probably Guatemala where the novel is set is specific to Central or Latin America, or to the South more generally, and that one can leave it behind by relocating to the North, as the narrator does. However, violence is a latent aspect of the narrator that emerges in his disinterested enjoyment of the testimonies, in an eager consumption of Latin American violence that further generates a desire to create more violence, to revive the civil registrar of Totonicapán and kill him again for generations. It is with him in the country that is probably Germany where he flees, and the farcical appearance of Pérez Mena as a deus ex machina confirms that the “jouissance of the Other is not in the Other ( who anyway does not exist ) but in the subject himself” ( Braunstein 2003 , 111, emphasis added).
