Lotze's Logik in the Light of Modern Developments in the Foundations of Mathematics
Abstract
This chapter compares specific elements of Lotze’s Logik with contemporary viewpoints in the philosophy of mathematics concerning objectivity, truth, evidence and ultimate justification. Our setting for this comparison is the ongoing debate about new mathematical axioms which are sufficiently strong to settle questions that are undecidable in classical mathematics. We argue mainly by way of textual evidence that certain features of theory formation that have come to light in connection with the search for new axioms are also discernible in Lotze’s philosophy of science.
