On Lotze's Role in the Psychologismusstreit
Abstract
There is a development in antipsychologism from Herbart to Husserl concerning the task of offering a conception of subjectivity consistent with its principles. Lotze represents an intermediate stage in this process: on the one hand, in opposition to Herbart, he takes a decisive step toward overcoming the naturalistic idea of subjectivity; on the other hand, however, he maintains with Herbart an unqualified commitment to the Principle of Immanence—a principle that would later become the object of explicit critique by both Frege and Husserl.
