Abstract

This chapter describes the video-based, self-paced learning modules for one of the oldest NASA-funded citizen science (or participatory science) programs known as Radio JOVE ( https://radiojove.gsfc.nasa.gov ). Conceived and developed by the first two authors of this chapter in collaboration with the NASA-funded SunRISE Ground Radio Lab, the Radio JOVE learning modules are designed to be used by prospective Radio JOVE participants to gain sufficient background knowledge to be able to actively and successfully participate in the project. The training videos enable participants to learn asynchronously in a self-paced manner, ensuring that they acquire the basic knowledge and vocabulary at each level before going on to the next, including (a) gaining hands-on experience in building and operating radio telescopes constructed from inexpensive kits, (b) making radio observations by operating their basic radio telescopes, and (c) analyzing the data obtained by the telescopes they constructed or from remote telescopes through the Internet. The modules present examples of practical applications of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) materials and, therefore, may be used to supplement teaching and enhance learning. They may also be used as supplemental materials to train pre- or in-service STEM middle or high school teachers. Preliminary survey data collected from instructors who have used the modules have shown that teachers use these self-paced modules in their school science clubs to provide students with a structured yet flexible learning path in space science and radio astronomy. Further, participants unanimously agreed that they would recommend the project to other teachers. Specifically, they noted positive effects on students&s; (a) interest in science and aspirations to a career in science and engineering, (b) confidence in doing science, and (c) teamwork skills, and suggested areas of improvement.
