Abstract

Chapter 1 traces the evolution of formal mentoring programmes, highlighting their growth from the 1980s to their current professionalised status. It explores the increasing complexity and diversity of mentoring applications in sectors such as education, business, healthcare, and public service. This chapter underlines the significance of professional standards, notably the EMCC Global International Standards for Mentoring and Coaching Programmes, and the emerging recognition of the mentoring programme manager’s role. Twenty-two case studies from various contexts illustrate the breadth and impact of mentoring, covering intra- and inter-organisational initiatives, global collaborations, and specific focus areas such as leadership development, diversity, and ethical support. This chapter also outlines the book’s structure, previewing chapters that detail standards, programme management, and comprehensive frameworks for mentoring success. Overall, it positions the mentoring programme manager as pivotal to effective delivery, innovation, and the creation of transformative learning and development environments.
