Abstract

Chapter 4 addresses the importance of mentoring programmes in the public and education sectors, addressing challenges like staff retention, leadership development, and adaptability. In the public sector, mentoring improves talent retention, fosters leadership, and enhances service delivery, notably in health, social care, and local government. In education, where global demand for educators is high, mentoring supports professional growth and reduces attrition, especially among women in academia. Three case studies highlight diverse approaches: Middlesex University’s programme, accredited by EMCC Global, builds leadership and communication skills through structured workshops and peer support; the Norwegian Armed Forces’ initiative focuses on leadership development for senior military personnel, blending mentorship with academic credit opportunities; and a Dublin-based organisation’s programme advances female leadership pipelines and skills development via traditional, reverse, and peer mentoring. Collectively, these initiatives demonstrate how tailored mentoring fosters resilience, growth, and strategic success within organisations.
