Nietzschean Frenemies and their Role in his Project of Self-Creation
Abstract
This chapter examines Nietzsche's ideas about worthy enemies through cases studies concerning two of his nominated enemies, David Strauss and the figure of the priest. It is argued that these enemies are for Nietzsche objects of deep respect. This is shown through elements of agonal struggle, mimetic rivalry, emulation and elevation. Strauss and the priest should thus be considered Nietzsche's frenemies as much as his enemies. It is partly through interaction with such frenemies that Nietzsche enacts his project of self-creation.
