Abstract

The lack of exposure to our natural hair in and out of the home contributes to our vulnerability to styles that might be damaging to our hair but provide some relief in our ability to move throughout the world. This chapter introduces the hair cycle of escalation and texturized code-switching as a way to explore how Black women move beyond embodied colonization and make decisions around our hair that are subversive. The idea “agency and choice” is at the crux of this chapter.
