Life stories
Abstract
This chapter presents biographies of the 13 principal characters whose stories and experiences make up this broader narrative: three mothers, their three children, one housemother, four social workers and two committee members. It is, inevitably, a lengthy chapter; while we considered sub-dividing it into two chapters, we finally rejected this, because we felt that it might reinforce a message of separateness (between service users and providers) which we wished to avoid.
