Abstract

This chapter paints a picture of the temporal, physical and social environments of the children&s;s homes in which the children grew up (Edzell Lodge and then the two Margaret Cottages). These environments, including house, garden and neighbourhood, had a profound impact on the residents, both staff and children. Characteristics of staffing personnel, visitors and profiles of the resident population are sketched, along with patterns of daily routines, rules and emotions.
