Abstract

This concluding chapter synthesises the findings from interviews with twenty-nine young men and labour market data to explore their transitions from education to work in contemporary Britain, characterised by precarious employment and deteriorated meritocratic promises. In challenging the assumption of meritocracy, this book reveals that while education remains culturally valued, it no longer guarantees stable employment. While aspirations persist despite widespread precarity, young men are exposed to underemployment, zero-hours contracts and regional disparities. It proposes policy reforms, strengthening labour protections, addressing geographical inequalities and enhancing social capital to foster equitable transitions. These insights highlight the need to reframe youth marginality as a structural issue, advocating for systemic change to restore dignity and opportunity.
