Abstract

This chapter is based on a large Randomized Control Trial project (RCT) done with the health system in the city of Mumbai called the City Initiative for Newborn Health (CINH). This project had two dimensions- a technical dimension that involved changing medical protocols and a behavioural change dimension that was done using Appreciative Inquiry. The RCT took up nine maternity homes for interventions and another nine was kept as control group. The project not only helped to transform the maternity homes in the city and is now taken up for other cities across the state. The central theme of the story is how the reality of the health system, the maternity homes, and the patients were transformed, and that change in social construction of reality transformed the system. The story describes what we did, how we did and our own experiences of drenching (which we didn&s;t have a name for at that time).
