Abstract

This chapter explores how diaspora and their transnational politics disrupt categories of core and periphery as distinct and shaped by top-down power relations. Diaspora politics in today's world shows how power is generated transnationally across a core-periphery unitary field, shaping and empowering both core and periphery politics and movements. Equally, it exposes the tensions undergirding these transnational engagements, where new alliances, identities, and national movements jostle for power and ascendancy within this singular space. Diasporic agency and a core-periphery optic are therefore useful for observing the inherently complex and contradictory ways that international relations is constituted in today's globalised world.
