Abstract

This chapter explores the complex ethical landscape of working with imprisoned populations. Unlike doing therapy with other populations, this population is “protected.” Therefore, conducting research and clinical work has extra barriers that other populations do not. This chapter will discuss ethical considerations, including foundational ethical principles – such as autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice – and their application to the unique context of incarceration. Topics include specific ethical considerations for Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs), informed consent and research, as well as confidentiality. Through case studies and a review of current ethical guidelines, this chapter aims to provide ethical considerations and best practices for MFTs to navigate challenges while upholding the dignity of rights of imprisoned individuals.
