Abstract

This chapter examines challenges in romantic relationships affected by incarceration, particularly during post-release reunification. Key issues include difficulties in coping, communication, conflict resolution, adjusting to personality changes, unmet expectations, jealousy, infidelity, and risks of recidivism. Protective factors that mitigate these strains on relationships are discussed, though their limitations are noted, along with recommendations from existing literature for intervention strategies. The chapter highlights the role of marriage and family therapists (MFTs) in supporting couples during the post-release transition, while considering how factors present during the incarceration period influence the challenges couples face once this period has ended. It first reviews therapeutic interventions by MFTs and other systemic clinicians working with couples during incarceration. Additionally, fictional case examples illustrate typical post-release challenges and showcase research-informed interventions by MFTs that promote better relational outcomes. These examples offer practical insights into how MFTs help couples navigate issues, ultimately fostering stronger, more resilient relationships.
