Abstract

India is a developing nation, and access to and knowledge about psychiatry are very poor among the general population. This is especially true in the older geriatric population, and hence, geriatric mental health has many challenges that prevent the development and realization of its full potential. Hence, we have made an attempt to underline the problems faced by geriatric mental health in India. We aim to describe in detail the issues that geriatric mental health is plagued by, the causes of these problems, the approach we need to adopt to solve these problems and the implementation of the difficult but achievable solutions. The important challenges are the demography of Indian ageing and what it poses for geriatric mental health, sexual issues in the elderly, geriatric depression and its extent, dementia care in India, the elder lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and its problems, and many more specific issues that shall be discussed in the chapter.
