Abstract

India, similarly to other countries, is undergoing unprecedented demographic changes. Increasing longevity and the fall in fertility rate have resulted in a dramatic increase, in both absolute and relative terms, in the number of older people aged 60 and over. This change presents wide-ranging social, health, and economic challenges that must be urgently addressed so that adequate policies can be implemented rapidly. This chapter opens with India's demographic changes and then discusses the major concerns and challenges these shifts pose. This chapter concludes with policy recommendations that may serve as the next step forward as responses to the concerns and challenges that this longevity revolution is posing in the Indian region.
