Abstract

The foundations of a child's connection with nature are built through engaging their senses. This chapter examines our familiar senses of sight, touch, smell, vision and hearing, and the science of nature connection in how children develop these senses: the regular rhythms and sounds of the sea; and the way complexity develops in the brain in response to the complexity of the visual world. After describing each sense, there is a page from the Nature Passport with activities for children to guide their engagement and to help adults understand the relationship a child has with the natural world; and an explanation of how each activity helps the child.
