Level One (Part 3)
Abstract
A child doesn’t use these senses one at a time, any more than an adult does. They experience all these senses together and each feeds into the other. US occupational therapist and educational psychologist, Jean Ayres, coined the term ‘sensory integration’ to describe the bringing together of all the senses so a child can learn holistically. All eight senses work together to support optimal child development – and nature provides the best environment for this. Finally, this chapter examines sensory processing challenges and when children may be under or oversensitive to each of the eight senses.
