Abstract

The work of counselling psychologists can be impactful on several levels. Closest to home, the therapeutic work of counselling psychologists can directly support individuals in making constructive changes to their lives. As research-informed professionals, counselling psychologists are active in monitoring the experience of therapy, a practice that can help practitioners to be responsive to the wants and needs of those seeking support. Such a process might involve supporting individuals with alleviating distress, engaging in personal growth activities, or providing information about relevant resources. Further afield, counselling psychologists are also involved in service development. Information gathered from those who use services, both from the examination of outcome measures and through discussions with experts by experience, can support the development of resources going forward. Likewise, taking on educational roles or developing new therapeutic resources can help to shape future professionals or service provision.
