Layoffs to Livestock
Abstract
Matthew Pritchard reflects on a 40-year career in the petroleum industry – a demanding, volatile field shaped by constant economic pressures and organizational upheavals. Amid frequent staff cuts and restructuring cycles, he was repeatedly forced to adapt, recalibrate, and reinvent. This chapter distils hard-won insights from decades of experience: the art of truly listening, the discipline of small-scale testing, and the challenge of steering innovation through controlled chaos. Drawing on business improvement frameworks and cross-cultural awareness, he explores how these principles ultimately shaped his transition into an unexpected early retirement. Far from a conclusion, retirement became an opportunity to reapply those lessons, forge a new identity, and rediscover purpose beyond the corporate arena. From deepwater drilling to ranch life in Texas, his reflections – by turns sobering and humorous – offer perspective for anyone facing their own crossroads.
