Abstract

My approach to reinvention of the self after retirement is that the ‘reinvention’ of retirement is real, public and permeates the whole of daily life, but in fact is ‘only’ the latest in a sequence of reinventions which may have begun at an early age, and which in these uncertain times is likely to have numerous iterations. But it was not always thus, and certainly not generally perceived as thus. I shall illustrate these points with my own life journey, and, in the spirit of this book, with the help of literary examples, in this case the work of poets.
