Abstract

This chapter explores the feminised wellness and self-care discourses that circulate on audio erotica apps like Quinn, Dipsea, Emjoy, and Ferly. To varying degrees, all four apps posit that their content is good for women, helping them to become sexually knowledgeable, confident, and appropriately desiring subjects. As such, audio erotica apps are able to claim a loftier mission than simply making pornographic smut to get off to: they are also healing, edifying, and transforming the lives of their female audience. The chapter primarily focuses on Emjoy and Ferly, as these two apps emphasise their wellness content over and above their erotic content. This content positions the pursuit of sexual wellness as an ongoing, hard, and yet enjoyable form of work, facilitated by expert-led audios, data-tracking technologies, and accountability measures. In this context, the erotic audios hosted on Emjoy and Ferly become couched in this wider program of wellness, creating the sense that listening to audio erotica is good not because it is sexy, entertaining, or pleasurable, but because it is healthy.
