Abstract

This concluding chapter reflects on the core promise that Quinn, Dipsea, Emjoy, and Ferly make to consumers: that their audio erotica constitutes a real representation of female desire. By making this promise, the apps suggest that they understand and take women seriously as consumers of sexually explicit material – they know what women really want, and the audio format is uniquely able to provide it. This audience is framed as deserving of explicit content that speaks to them and their desires, and that cultivating this desire through audio erotica is both empowering and healthy. Although the material found across the apps is diverse in many ways, allowing users to seek out and select specific forms of content, this book has identified a set of common themes that are illustrative of a particular sexual script for women in the 2020s: women prioritise wellbeing, narrative, authenticity, emotion, care, and intimacy. Ultimately, these common themes mark out audio erotica as a “safe” form of sexually explicit material that is both good and good for the implied female listener.
