Abstract

If you read the title as a signpost that the academy may be moving away from critical thought, or that our critiques of markets and marketing have run out of fuel, we probably would not disagree. The current crisis in critical thought in UK higher education ( Harvie, 2024 ) is just part of an omnicrisis that makes up a new permacrisis ( Bushby, 2022 ) that is seemingly everywhere we look. In this chapter, however, it is the realisation that crisis reveals critical aspects of capitalist markets and related marketing practices that interests us, along with what engagement with ‘crisis’ can do to support the agenda of critical marketing.
