Abstract

This chapter outlines tactical and strategic issues that should be considered by intelligence managers. In doing so it offers an overview as to the value of intelligence and unintended consequences. The chapter commences by outlining the context within which intelligence managers operate. Specifically, it provides an overview of different police operating models, and the role intelligence plays within them. It will then describe how managers can improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their staff by enhancing their well-being and professional development. It will also emphasise the importance of the manager in maintaining standards in terms of directing, authorising, and managing intelligence. Finally, the chapter will explore the concept of intelligence failure and explore ways in which this can be mitigated.
