Abstract

This chapter documents the Risonanze di Vino interdisciplinary creative research project in Campania, Southern Italy. Exploring sensory terroir , the project focused on non-visual senses (hearing, taste, smell) to unearth subtle sensory interactions in winegrowers’ intuitive engagement with their environment. These interactions were harnessed through crossmodal correspondences in the resulting multisensory artworks. Crossmodal sensescapes were created, using winegrowers’ sensory experiences to guide field recordings shaped into soundscapes designed to interact with specific wines. These sensescapes aimed to transmit the winegrowers’ cultural and personal experience of place and forge audience connections via sound-wine correspondences. The research reveals sensory terroir as a dynamic, fluid concept, not fixed but revealed through close multisensory attention and responsive to natural and cultural shifts. It highlights non-visual senses as valuable tools for understanding place and contributes to crossmodal art by grounding theoretical concepts in practical, interdisciplinary research.
