Abstract

Out of our intensive interaction with data, we generate codes to represent relevant statements identified. The codes shouldn’t only reflect the statements in the data but also address the research questions or meet the purpose of the study. This chapter provides a guide on how to decide on an appropriate coding strategy considering the type of qualitative research approach, nature of the research questions and content of the data. I will use interview data from the research project on genetically modified crops to demonstrate the coding process. Lastly, I will be providing a simple guide on how manual coding is done using Microsoft Word.
