Abstract

Qualitative research encompasses a breadth of ontologies, epistemologies, and methodologies, but underneath these various perspectives and approaches lie several similarities. These similarities include features such as placing the researcher in the role of a key instrument and holding the researcher accountable to demonstrate transparency and reliability throughout the research process. Qualitative research also relies heavily on triangulation of researcher interpretations through the use of multiple sources and types of sources of data, to demonstrate both thoroughness and saturation of the phenomena. In analysis, qualitative research draws on both inductive and deductive reasoning, with strong prioritization of participants’ meanings throughout the process. Throughout the research experience, qualitative research strongly embraces emergent designs, together with reflexive processes, which support the continual active engagement of the researcher in the process, adapting to the ever-dynamic research environments and topics.
