Abstract

How do we find our way among the mass of information from the human past? Historical methods, like other kinds of navigation, involve creativity as well as description. A Maori oral history tells of the traveler, Kupe, who tracked the night sky to cross the Pacific, steering his boat more than two thousand miles from Tahiti to the land now known as New Zealand.
