Four Gastro-Biographies, Four Recipes and a Lonesome Banquet
Abstract
This intermezzo follows the gastronomic biographies of four men – two philosophers, and two political figures. The couple of philosophers, namely Diogenes and Friedrich Nietzsche, are vegetarian and anti-vegetarian, respectively, whereas the couple of political leaders, Adolf Hitler and Donald Trump, are vegetarian and carnivorous. Their stomachs become self-contained entities, live a life of their own, construct a “stomach-narrative” and thus inspire four recipes for creating edible sculptures. Through a symbolic clash between philosophy and politics and their bodily representation, we redress preconceived ideas on the dichotomies between mind and body, intellect and matter, and the abstract versus the concrete. These edible sculptures are designed to be cooked and consumed by the readers, in order to create a lonesome, symbolically cannibalistic banquet. Or maybe not?
