Abstract

This case study explores the impact of higher and degree apprenticeships in the engineering sector. Through collaborations between engineering firms and private or public education providers, engineering apprentices develop a robust toolkit from which they can design, build and maintain the infrastructure around us and products we use. This involves the careful synthesis of practical, intellectual and interpersonal skills across the domains of mathematics, science, analysis, design, societal impact, and practical work. Apprentices combine these approaches in real engineering projects, enhancing their problem-solving and technical skills. Higher and degree apprenticeships in engineering aim to address the sector&s;s need for skilled professionals and have been the subject of numerous policy interventions because of their economic importance. Despite this, a number of conflicts and challenges remain.
