Abstract

This chapter explores the Black Planning Project’s framework of People, Place, Pedagogy, and Practice, which applies a holistic approach to Black planning by intersecting community planning with education, research and practice. The framework’s application is examined through several Black-led projects focused on housing, community planning and development in Nova Scotia and Ontario, Canada. These examples highlight the importance of creating a platform that connects Black communities and Black-led organizations, facilitating their engagement in planning and development. Despite the emergence of numerous creative and impactful Black planning initiatives across Canada in recent years, there remains a need to strengthen the connections between these various projects. Enhancing these connections will support the development of a comprehensive Black planning framework that bolsters community-led work and enables shared learning, ultimately leading to better outcomes in Black communities. Through the showcased case studies, the Black Planning Project explores its role as a catalyst, convener and connector, leveraging its networks to facilitate the engagement of Black communities and organizations in planning and development endeavors.
