Abstract

In this chapter, two senior student affairs leaders share their lived experiences advancing equity through socially just leadership in higher education. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly shifting political landscape for higher education, the authors affirm the urgent need for bold, values-driven leadership that centers justice, inclusion, and collective engagement. They argue that socially just administration is not an episodic act but a daily practice rooted in clarity of purpose, shared responsibility, and deep commitment. Through narrative reflection, the authors describe how equity shows up in day-to-day decisions, how teams are structured, how budgets reflect values, and how diverse students and staff are supported and uplifted. They examine how shared equity leadership, investment in infrastructure, learning and development, and intentional culture-building foster deeper equity outcomes and a greater sense of belonging. Given the complexity of this work, particularly at this current moment, they offer both cautionary tales and lessons learned as senior leaders, as the journey has not been easy. Ultimately, they call for cultural humility, trust-building, and creating partnerships as sacred responsibilities for higher education leaders, insisting that our students are counting on us to lead with integrity toward a more just, inclusive, and affirming campus environment.
