Abstract

In higher education, shared governance is the collaborative policy process that results in rules for most campus activities. Shared governance is based on a set of principles rather than structure, which honors the expertise and interests of the university’s main stakeholders. In this chapter, the authors argue shared governance has declined alongside the rise of neoliberal trends in higher education. The authors present a conceptual model for shared governance that centers on equity and social justice in order to shift policymaking to result in the redistribution of power and resources.
