Abstract

Given increasing attention on queer representation and the way queerness interacts with other marginalized identities, this chapter is framed around the theoretical concept of intersectionality. Children’s and YA literature scholars have noted the ways the field of youth literature has historically constructed queerness as “taboo” or “undesirable,” but since the 1990s, Latinx children’s and YA authors have explored nuanced, critical depictions of queerness. This chapter thus examines key trends in representation, such as family responses to queer characters, coming out narratives, and love stories.
