Abstract

This study delves into the dynamic evolution of universities’ third mission by employing an institutional logics framework. The evolution is examined through tracing the shift in university models or paradigms: from the ivory tower model to the entrepreneurial university and subsequently to the sustainable entrepreneurial university. The chapter&s;s objectives are threefold: firstly, to pinpoint the distinct institutional logics associated with each university model in relation to the third mission; secondly, to analyse the interplay and potential conflicts between these logics during paradigm transitions; and thirdly, to propose strategies that can alleviate these tensions by invoking specific hybrid logics, ideologies, or institutionalised practices. The findings provide valuable insights for university leaders and managers to navigate the complexities of universities’ evolving roles in contemporary society.
