Abstract

This chapter covers the most important concepts in Internal Family Systems (IFS). The theory of multiplicity of the mind is described, as well as definitions of parts, managers, firefighters and exiles. The essential philosophical underpinnings of IFS are discussed: the existence of a healthy, undamaged, authentic Self along with the belief that all parts have a positive intention. A series of exercises helps the reader engage with their own parts and to try out, firsthand, the IFS model.
