Abstract

Chapter 7 teaches us about the ways in which parts become polarized and in conflict with one another. Hazel’s treatment shows the complicated manner in which polarized parts distract from more vulnerable pain. When parts can see that they have the same goal in mind, they can step back and allow for healing of that pain. Another little girl, Amelia, struggles over masturbating. She is not only in internal conflict but in conflict with her parents as well. Though this case does not resolve, Amelia’s knowledge of her parts and her appreciation of her therapy is poignant. John is a 12th grader who explores polarized parts with the help of his therapist Latasha Pennant, LCPC, at a mental health agency.
