Abstract

Chapter 8 describes the process of unburdening, which is a hallmark of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. Through Henry, selectively mute, and Juliana, a little girl traumatized by her mother’s difficult pregnancy, the reader learns the steps to help children release the beliefs, feelings, and even physical sensations that cause them pain. This chapter shows the power of IFS to help children witness, care for, and release pain from parts. They then can come to take their healthy, happy, and rightful place in the child’s emotional system. Verbatim session dialogue as well as pictures and drawings add color to the chapter.
