Abstract

The virtual gig economy in India is rapidly expanding, driven by digital platforms, increasing Internet penetration, and flexible work arrangements. While it offers significant opportunities, gig entrepreneurs face challenges such as income uncertainty, intense competition, and lack of social security. This study examines the evolving gig economy, highlighting the critical role of skill development and ethical considerations in ensuring sustainability. Using a two-phased qualitative approach, we first review existing literature to understand entrepreneurial skill requirements and ethical concerns. In the second phase, we conduct expert interviews with successful gig entrepreneurs to explore challenges, strategies, and best practices for skill development. The study identifies key competencies required for gig entrepreneurs, emphasizing the importance of upskilling, reskilling, and leveraging emerging technologies such as virtual reality (VR). It also addresses the ethical concerns, including data privacy and the digital divide, which impact access to opportunities in the gig economy. Our findings offer insights for policymakers, platform providers, and entrepreneurs to foster an inclusive and skill-driven gig workforce. By equipping gig workers with essential skills and ethical guidelines, the study contributes to a more sustainable and equitable gig economy in India.
